Printer Friendly Version Embassy`s reaction to the events during the final match of the Australian Football Cup @ 14 October 2022 01:38 AM

The Embassy of the Republic of Serbia strongly condemns any incitement to national, racial and religious intolerance, as well as the glorification of criminal, fascist and Nazi regimes, as well as their collaborationists.

The Embassy of the Republic of Serbia is aware of the unpleasant scenes during the final match of the Australian Football Cup and the absolutely inappropriate behaviour of the fans of the football club "Sydney United 58 FC" in the form of Nazi salutes and shouting slogans of the criminal, Ustasha, regime, which is responsible for the death of a large number of Serbs, Jews, Roma and members of other nations during the Second World War. Without intending to generalize and negatively characterize all the fans of the mentioned football club, we regret to note that such behaviour, primarily, speaks volumes about themselves.

The Embassy also noted that the Football Australia immediately strongly condemned, as stated in their statement, the actions of a small minority of individuals, who engaged behaviour that is not in consistent with Football Australia’s values and wider community expectations. Also, the Embassy welcomes conducting a police investigation against the responsible persons - in order to identify and process all of them, as well as disciplinary proceedings against the club itself, due to the behaviour of its, so-called, fans.

The prosecution and potential punishment of perpetrators is the exclusive responsibility of the Australian authorities, and the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia expressed concern to the authorities about this kind of behaviour, which offends not only the members of the Serbian community - but also the entire civilized world.
